Kanha National park is located in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh and it extends over an area of over 1,940-sq-kms. The major feature of this region’s interesting topography is the horseshoe shape valley and the whole park area is surrounded by the spurs of the Mekal.

By a special statue in 1955, Kanha national park came into being since then, a series of stringent conservation programmes for the protection of the park’s flora and fauna has given Kanha its deserved reputation for being one of the finest and best administered national parks in Asia, an irresistible attraction for all wild life lovers a true haven for its animal and avian population. Kanha national park has 22 species of mammals. Those most easily spotted are TIGER, Indian hare, Indian wild dog, the Stripped Palm Squirrel, Common langur, Jackal, Wild Pig, Chital or Spotless deer, Barasingha or Swamp deer, Sambar and black Buck.
Patient watching should reward the visitor, with a sight of Indian Fox, Sloth bear,
Striped hyena, Jungle cut, Lepord, Mouse Deer, Chausingha or four horned antelope,
Nilgai, Ratel and Porcupine. Avian Species: Kanha National Park has some 200 species
of birds. Watchers should station themselves in the hills, where the mixed and bamboo
forests harbour many species and in the grassy forest clearings. Water birds can
be seen near the park’s many rivulets and at Sarvantal, a pool that is frequented
by water birds and the area in front of the museum.

Kanha’s Sal and Bamboo forest ,rolling grasslands and meandering stream stretch
over the 940 km. The abundance and wild life species in Kanha national park, forms
the core of the Kanha tiger reserve created in1974 under project tiger. The park
is only habitat of the rare hard grounder Barasingha.

Hallon and Banjar of 250kms to 300kms each. Though one of these was subsequently
disbanded .The area remained a protected one until 1947. Depletion of the tiger
population in the year that followed led to the area being made an absolute sanctuary

How to Reach Kanha National Park :

By Air : Jabalpur at 200 -kms is the nearest airport connected directly with New
Delhi and Mumbai airport to visit Kanha National Park.

By Rail :Jabalpur at 175-kms is the convenient rail head to visit Kanha.

By Road :Kanha National Park is connected by road with Jabalpur 175-kms, Khajuraho
445-kms, Nagpur 266-kms, Raipur 219-kms. Within the park: Koshi – Kanha (9-kms),
Kishi – Katia (4-kms), Kishi – Mukki (32-kms).

For the tourist traveling in train they have to arrive at Jabalpur railway station
which is connected with all the trains from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. From Delhi
there are around 5 trains which are directly connected to Jabalpur. Tourist can
also board the train originated from Delhi at Agra and Gwalior. Jaipur is also connected
directly to Jabalpur.
Jabalpur is also connected to Delhi and Mumbai. The Spice jet flight takes off from
Delhi early in the morning to Jabalpur. The same carrier flies to Mumbai after landing
at Jabalpur. Thereafter, it follows the return route i.e Mumbai-Jabalpur-Delhi.
There is another flight of Air India which is thrice a week connecting Delhi-Jabalpur
which is also an early morning flight.
Most of the train arrive Jabalpur in the morning. The tourist can either drive straight
to Kanha from Jabalpur station or can check-in the hotel in Jabalpur and see Bheraghat,
Dhuandhar, Balancing rock, Museum etc. One can stay at Jabalpur at the hotels located
in the city or a hotel at Bheraghat. Madhya Pradesh tourist development corporation
has got a very good hotel at Bheraghat which is at the top of the hill overlooking
the Narmada river flowing between the marble mountains. It’s a good place to stay
and is around 25 km from the railway station.
The best way to reach Kanha is by pre arranging the taxi. It takes 3-4 hours to
reach Kanha by a car with a brief halt at the Mandala. One can easily catch the
afternoon safari to the National park once they reach Kanha.

Best Season to Visit Kanha National Park :
February to June although cool season (October to February) is much more comfortable
and still very good for wildlife. The park is closed from July 01 to October 01
because of the monsoon.

Park Visit Timings :
1. 15 November to 15 February – Sunrise to 12.00 noon and 3.00 pm to Sunset.
2. 16 February to 30 April – Sunrise to 1200 noon and 4.00 pm to Sunset.
3. 1 May to 30 June – Sunrise to 11.00 am and 5.00 pm to Sunset.

Safaris at Kanha :
Safaris at Kanha is done on an open jeep which accommodates 6 persons. Not more
then 6 persons are allowed to enter into the park. Along with the drive a licensed
guide will also accompanying the tourist as per the rule.

The safaris into the national park are distributed into following zones
Kanha Zone, Kisili zone, Sarhi zone and Mukki zone. One has to buy the entry tickets
of the park for any of the above listed zones depending upon the availability. Kanha
zone is the premium zone which has higher entry charges. The probability of sighting
a tiger is more in this zone. However, sighting a tiger purely depends on the luck
of the person. Anybody can see tigers in any of the zone. There are many other beautiful
animals, birds, flora and fauna which are available in the park to see and appreciate.
Therefore, tourist should come with a mind that just the Tiger sighting is not important
for them but enjoying the national park as a whole with all the animals, birds flora
and fauna is also important for them.
Timings of the safaris
There are 02 safaris authorized by the park authorities per day one is early in
the morning from 06 a.m till 10 a.m and the other is in the afternoon which is3
p.m till sunset. Closing day: Every Wednesday the evening safari is closed at Kanha
, Bandhavgarh and Pench national park.

Hotels in Kanha :
Hotels in Kanha are situated at the two locations. The nearest location is towards
the Kisli when one is driving from Jabalpur. The other location is towards Behiyar
and is closer to the tourist driving from Nagpur. Hotel of all categories are available
at Kanha National park.

It is better to pre book the hotel on American plan i.e on full board as there is
a scarcity of restaurants in Kanha at both the areas listed above. Moreover, the
resorts are also located at far distances and it is not easy to move from one place
to another unless you have your own vehicle available there.
